WHO WAS GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER, HENRY FORD, COPERNICUS, LEONADO DA VINCI, MARIE CURIE, SIR ISAAC NEWTON.....
GOERGE WASHINGTON CARVER; George
Washington Carver was born to slave parents but rose to become an important
agricultural scientist. He discovered more than 300 different uses for the
peanut, and he also did important work with cotton and other crops. Agricultural
scientist George Washington Carver developed many different products from
peanuts,
including soap, ink, flour, and axle grease.George Washington Carver
was born on a farm near Diamond, Missouri, in 1864. His parents were slaves. Carver
earned many awards and honors for his work. In 1923, the National Association
for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) awarded him the Spingarn Medal.
In 1935, he was appointed to an important position in the U.S. Department of
Agriculture.
HENRY FORD; Henry Ford founded
the Ford Motor Company, an automobile manufacturer. In the early 1900s, he made
the most popular cars in the United State.Henry Ford set up factories to make
cars quickly. As car parts moved along an assembly line, each worker did a
specific task, as shown here. The workers did the same task, over and over. The
Model T was a simple, sturdy car that most Americans could afford. Between 1908
and 1927, Ford built 15 million Models.
COPERNICUS; Nicolaus Copernicus was the founder of
modern astronomy. Earlier astronomers thought the Sun revolved around Earth,
but Copernicus theorized that the opposite was true. By the late 1600s, his
theory was widely accepted.
Copernican System
This drawing illustrates the
theory of astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus that the Sun is the center of our
solar system. Copernicus came up with his theory in the 16th century. Later
astronomers proved his ideas were correct.

LEONADO DA VINCI;Leonardo da
Vinci was not only one of the greatest painters of all time, but also an
architect, sculptor, engineer, and scientist. He worked during the late 1400s and
early 1500s mostly in Italy. Da Vinci imagined inventions, like a flying
machine, that were not made until hundreds of years later.
Mona Lisa
The Mona Lisa was painted by
Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. The woman’s mysterious smile has made the
painting one of the most famous pieces of art in the world.
The Last Supper
Leonardo da Vinci’s mural The
Last Supper shows Jesus telling his disciples that one of them will betray him.
This mural appears on the wall of a church in Milan, Italy.
MARIE CURIE:
Marie Curie
Marie Curie was a famous
scientist who studied radioactivity. In 1903, she became the first woman to win
a Nobel Prize, sharing the prize in physics. She won a second Nobel Prize in
1911 in chemistry.
Marie Curie’s Notebooks
French physicist Marie Curie
made many important discoveries about radioactivity. Shown here are some of her
notebooks detailing her theories.
SIR ISAAC NEWTON;
Isaac Newton
Isaac Newton was one of the
greatest scientists of all time. In the late 1600s and early 1700s, he came up
with theories about gravity, motion, and light.Newton was born in Woolsthorpe,
England, on December 25, 1642. He loved to build mechanical models, but he was
not a good student. His mother took him out of school so that he could help run
the family farm. Newton did not like farming. He liked to read and study on his
own. Newton invented a new kind of mathematics called calculus.
Today, scientists and engineers use calculus to solve many kinds of problems.
Newton came up with theories
about gravity and motion. He thought that the same force pulling people and
apples down to Earth keeps the Moon going around Earth and the planets going
around the Sun. He used mathematics to prove his theories.
Newton used a prism, a
piece of glass with many sides, to study light. He found that sunlight is made
up of every color in the rainbow.
