GALILEO;Italian astronomer
Galileo made important discoveries about the Moon and the planets. He is most
famous for arguing that the Earth goes around the Sun, which many scientists
and leaders did not believe at the time. Using one of the first telescopes,
astronomer Galileo discovered the mountains and craters on the surface of the
Moon in the early 1600. In the early 1600s, Galileo was the first person to use
a telescope to look at objects in the night sky. He discovered many things,
including mountains and craters on the Moon and four moons going around
Jupiter. Galileo was sentenced to life in prison. He was old and sick, so
instead they kept him inside his house. In 1992, Pope John Paul II said the
church was wrong to convict Galileo of heresy.
CHALES DARWIN: Charles Darwin
was a British scientist who developed the famous theory of evolution. He said
that animals evolve, or change gradually, over time. Darwin’s theory was
eventually accepted by most scientists. In 1831, a young Charles Darwin set sail
on the British ship the Beagle on a scientific expedition. On this trip Darwin
made observations of animals that led to his famous theory of evolution. These
giant tortoises live at the Charles Darwin Station on the Galápagos Islands.
Darwin’s observations of the animals on these islands in the 1830s helped him to
form his famous theory of evolution.
ELI WHITNEY; in 1793, Eli
Whitney invented the cotton gin, a machine that made cotton farming much faster
and easier. This invention helped make cotton the most important farm crop in
the American south. The cotton gin, invented by Eli Whitney in 1793, quickly
separated raw cotton fiber from the seeds. Before this invention, workers had
to slowly remove the seeds by hand.Eli Whitney was born in 1765 in Westboro,
Massachusetts. He attended Yale College (now Yale University).
