Who is a true disciple?
Disciple in Greek is ‘Mathetes’
(µαθητης) derivative of ‘Mavthano’ (µανθανω) meaning “I learn.”
A disciple is a learner. A true
disciple is one who follows his master. Jesus is our master. Therefore as true
disciples we should emulate Christ, pursue a genuine righteousness.
Discipleship means following the
lifestyle outlined by the master. Jesus is our master. Therefore, a true
disciple is one who follows his master. A true disciple is expected to emulate
Christ, pursue a genuine righteousness that exceeds that of the Pharisees and
the teachers of the law.
The New Testament uses accounts from
the Old Testament to warn us against inappropriate
behaviour or to give models
or patterns to follow: Job’s patience, Elijah’s prayers, the faith of numerous
Saints e.t.c. Christ himself is our prime example in such area as Humility,
Love, Service, Gentleness, Patient Suffering and Regard for others.
A true disciple is expected to live an
exemplary live.
In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus described His ideal for His disciples.

Conclusion
The best way to summarise the life
of a true disciple (Christian life) is that here and now by God’s grace we make
progress in Godly Living (Holiness), not toward it.
“… be careful how you live…”Ephesians 5:15(NLT)
