NIGERIA INDEPENDENCE POEM

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE
NIGERIA
“WE HAIL THEE”
The broad territory lay upon Gold sea and Honey Ocean
People of various histories sparsely dispersed
Daily activities sweetly set in motion
Blessed in many ways than we can really mention

Thus like calm lakes we lived on our land
Enjoying the breeze that blew on us back then
Our feet firmly balanced on this cool sand
Holding tightly the pole of culture with our hands

Then the white-heads appeared over our sea
With measuring tools they came to divide us here
Our honey-combs they could from abroad see
So they came quickly and brought with them tea

What a deadly sight it was to see their troops
Marching like Napoleon soldiers towards our pool
They said it was to unite and make perfect our groups
A very good plan they adopted and made us the fool

We were threatened and solely afraid
A balance omen for them to take-up our cake
Yet some natives opened their arms and our foes embraced
Then ton by ton they gathered our honey with rake

Our white friends came truly and showed us the way
They took our darkened world and changed it to day
We got all we wanted and nothing but hay
We lied at their feet helplessly with nothing to say

Both the honey and the cake now was in their hands
The leaves hidden with us was no longer ours
We lived on and cared less because we still ate
While all we owned danced off and left with us debt

Then it all came to the lack of the first said
We raised our arms and tried to force back our cakes
The antelope is bigger but the lion can still chase
We were silenced and then we saw their true face

Our water vessels laced their boots
Our glooming rulers fired their loots
1929 brought us nothing but mare shame and fear
We regretted ever giving the plan our ears

But then, the return of our being brought us hope
Natives in diaspora lightened up our night
Some active living natives joined the good fight
Our dirty flags were washed with nationalist soap

Nevertheless, unwilling were they to give us all up
Mixture of coffee and cocoa came into our cup
We were stratified to make a great three
The golden boot, the whiten cup; all our dead flies

A wish in dry lands makes no gain
The clap of our hands brought us pain
Little birds flew over with one arm
Our wilderness lacked the sprinkle of water

Then we were given the key to make things right
We got the stage to come together and fight
The white-heads did well in giving us the chance
We came together and then created a fair dance

And there it was, lying by the river side
The purple silver we had searched for with our lives
Our masters made their best by allowing us the ride
1960 sang off our chains and tied hives

We thought we had it just then
No! We were only thrown into dark den
We bounced out and hit hard like premature babies
Carrying out our affairs like pigs under worn outlook

When we could no more stand the test of things
We turned against ourselves like scattered tins
Keeping ourselves was more than just bean and cake
We had to settle down and think by our lake

But then, our native guys in thick uniforms immerged
Their existence took over the silhouette of white-heads
They forced a sticky tape and the broken regions bridged
1966 fell on us like brimstone; we embraced the our dead

The deaths that followed was much more than the first
It came to us with pestilence, epidemic and sickness
Our loses could be regarded as the worst
We shoot ourselves off with ferocious recklessness

Wailing mothers took over the streets
Dirge in the mouth of women sinking deep
The chanting children with empty plates in their hands
The ranting speeches of youths with no homes to sleep

Thereafter we left our masters’ system
We left their umbrella and embraced another
Starting from the root until we grew a strong stem
The states’ was better than that of our fore fathers

And yet, the golden cap was worn on dirty heads
The success of transmission was met by stiff opposition
The labour for change amount all into vain
Our very own leaders gave way for whizzing greed

Then to crown up all our sucking acts
Our rulers had more to be taken for their own use
The gold we found under our soil made us more dupes
It fattened the rich and thinned the poor

With our oil, we forgot the greenish lurk easily
We ignored our job for millions of millenniums
Our strong arms became very soft dizzily
We wished to count papers rather than our leaves

Hush! What a deadly mistake we did make
To think our gold would remain forever in our pity use
The thing now is fading away for goodness sake
The problems we now suffer was made by our bare hands

And here we have gotten to with our yeas
After tearing in the wilderness of nothingness
We have made it even with our fears
We have to redeem the lost and give our cares

The great gracious people of NIGERIA
Our deeds as made us our mark
He has created a light for us in the dark
Faithful is He to us in every area

Let us therefore rise up to our feet
Let us stand in this might we now have
Embrace our unity in spite of our diversity
Let us relax and have very well our seat

Trust me; the whole world is waiting solemnly for us
For the manifestation of the sons of light
For our diplomatic entry into the world of awesomeness
We shall lead the whole world in His goodness

We are great people; this is our strength
The might we’ve been gaining from the start of things
The fulfillment of these dreams lies in our hands
We are powerful; goodly made beings

The words of PRiNCioLoGY are just endless
What a great country with a stunning future
I wonder what the world would say when we can see
NIGERIA, the country of the wise, we hail thee.
