INTRODUCTION: So many people
spend a lot of their income on different manner of diseases every year. Somse
people even find it pretty difficult to believe it is possible to live without
a form of disease or the other. It is so sadden to see that ailments like
cancer are now becoming a part of our daily lives. Our hospitals are filled
with people receiving treatment on different type of illness every second,
every minute. But even with the
unrelenting effort of our doctors, nurses,
specialists and other medical personnel, the rate at which people die of
diseases increase daily. The effects of the death of these people are highly
felt sometimes; consider when the breadwinner of a family dies, the whole
family runs into liquidation, too sadden. The effect goes further by increasing
the rate of poverty, crime, hooliganism and other nefarious act in the society.
To worsen matters, we can’t avoid sharing our society with these people. This
should give us serious food for thought. We should therefore be dogged to stay
healthy always.
WHAT IS HEALTH?
Health is the condition of a person’s
body or mind. It is the level of functional and metabolic efficiency of a
living organism. In humans, it is the ability of individuals or communities to
adapt and self-manage when facing physical, mental, psychological and social
changes with environment. The World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as
“a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the
absence of disease or infirmity.
According to the definitions
above, it is crystal clear that being healthy is not just being free from any
manner of disease, but completeness physically, mentally, socially and
emotionally. It deals with the overall condition of the body. It is the
condition of an organism or one of its part in which it performs its vital
functions normally or properly; the state of being completely sound in body and
mind. This discovery will however lead us to the next question.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO BE COMPLETELY
HEALTHY?
Many people ask this question in their
mind after being to different health centers and seeing different people with
diverse illnesses; this plants the fear of impossibility in many people. The
simple and perfect answer to this question is ‘YES, IT IS POSSIBLE.’ You do not
need to be optimistic in accepting this, it is the fact. There are so many
people in the world today who are completely healthy. That they are completely
healthy doesn’t mean they don’t go for checkups, but they are sound in body and
mind. I’m sure you’d know some of them if you would accept the fact and set
your mind straight.
